Met Joins Dark Side, Seems Happy with Decision

Met reliever Ryota Igarashi officially joined the dark side Tuesday.

After years of bad press from George Lucas and his various iterations of the Star Wars saga, the dark side of the Force — via its main practitioners, the Sith people — has recently sought to rebrand its image.

Among the group’s most recent converts? Met relief pitcher Ryota Igarashi.

Igarashi was recently approached by Sith representatives regarding a potential conversion, and made said conversion official yesterday during a ceremonial lightsaber dedication at New York’s Citi Field.

When asked about his encounters with the Sith — and with Vader, specifically — Igarashi was effusive in his praise. “You watch the movies,” Igarashi told NotGraphs, “and you get the sense that these guys are all bad and trying to hurt everyone — and maybe that’s how they used to be — but the Sith have been super nice to me. They’re really great about giving me a flexible schedule so I can play baseball, and I got a free six-month membership at New York Sports Club, too.”

“Plus, a lot of people won’t know this, but DV — which, that’s what I call Vader — is hilarious. The other day he said to Palpatine, he was like, ‘Man, you should get some skin cream or something.’ It was pretty funny.”

When asked for comment, Darth Vader responded simply by handing NotGraphs an organically farmed salmon cake with this effing amazing homemade garlic mayonnaise.

In a slightly related story, the WSJ reports today that R.A. Dickey’s at-bat music is The Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back (really).
