Inserting Matt Cain into Works of Literature

Matt Cain is starting tonight for the Giants in their elimination game against the Cardinals in San Francisco. He is also having his name inserted into works of literature — or, at least, extant texts — by the author.

Book of Genesis

Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Matt Cain.

Matt Cain said to his brother, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Matt Cain attacked his brother and killed him.

Then the Lord said to Matt Cain, “Where is your brother?”

“I don’t know,” Matt Cain replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Matt Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch.

Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Matt Cain’s brother, since Matt Cain killed him.”

Inserting Matt Cain into The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner.

“When the shadow of the sash appeared on the curtains it was between seven and eight o’ clock and then I was in time again, hearing the watch. It was Grandfather’s and when Matt Cain gave it to me he said I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire; it’s rather excruciating-ly apt that you will use it to gain the reducto absurdum of all human experience which can fit your individual needs no better than it fitted his or his father’s. I, Matt Cain, give it to you not that you may remember time, but that you might forget it now and then for a moment and not spend all your breath trying to conquer it. Because no battle is ever won Matt Cain said. They are not even fought. The field only reveals to man his own folly and despair, and victory is an illusion of philosophers and fools.”
