Death To Black Alternate Jerseys: Florida Marlins

Outside of the very rare time when black is actually a significant part of a team’s color scheme (the Chicago White Sox, and to a lesser extent, the Pittsburgh Pirates, who still have no excuse for not bringing back a yellow jersey), the use of the black alternate jersey just screams laziness on the part of the uniform designers. In what way does a black jersey bring out the character of the team? Answer: in no way does a black jersey bring out the character of a team.

My first target is the black uniforms worn by the Florida Marlins, seen here courtesy of Sportslogos.net:

Weak. Lame. Boring. For a team that showed so much promise with that wacky teal color (I love these hats), I just find it remarkably unimaginative and low-risk to use a black alternate uniform. Instead, I propose the following:

A very simple color-swap. The hat choice is negotiable: I’d be fine with using the all-black hat or the all-teal hat as well. The teal is an identifying trait of the Florida Marlins franchise, and if the team isn’t willing to showcase it, they need to go with a Rays-esque redesign, and not hide behind a character-less alternate uniform.

Agree that the black stinks, but the Marlins have all but ditched the teal. Can’t really be found on any of the jerseys anymore. In fact, next year they’re scrapping the current scheme all together and are rumored to be going with blue and orange. There are so many Mets fans down here already, maybe it’ll fool some of them into buying tickets.
