Theoretical Pittsburgh Pirates Yellow Jerseys

As I detailed in this post on the advent of new yellow (“gold”) uniforms for the Oakland Athletics, I love the idea of yellow as a primary color for jerseys. Along with Oakland, the only other candidate for a yellow jersey would be the Pittsburgh Pirates. After all, they did it in the 1970s.

These are pretty good, I guess. But I think we can do better.

The Pirates already have one of my favorite MLB jerseys in their black alternates:

The idea behind my jersey edit is pretty simple: just take this jersey and put black where the yellow is and yellow where the black is. I’m pretty happy with the results.

It’s a pretty simple design, with only two colors total. However, I think in that simplicity as well as in the effectiveness of the large “P” logo, we have something that could really work well on a baseball diamond.

When I saw this, though I knew I could go one step further. Just take a look at this:

When it comes to monochrome on baseball uniforms, I’m not a big fan of it with dark colors. Remember these atrocities from the Cuban World Baseball Classic team?

Not good. However, with lighter colors, I think it works better. Think a powder blue, or, in this case a yellow. I’m 100% sure that a jersey like this won’t see a major league field any time in the near future. I just think it looks cool in theory, and I bet it would look cool in practice.

Nice try. Beautiful. But as a long-suffering Pirate fan, you have to change what is inside. They stink and will always stink as long as Bob Nutting is the owner.

“They stink and will always stink as long as Bob Nutting is the owner.”

Ah, ignorance. Bob Nutting did not take over as majority owner of the team until 2007 when he bought out Kevin McClatchey’s shares of the team. Everything that happened prior to 2007 can be PARTLY attributed to Nutting, but to say that the last 20 years are his fault is a statement of ignorance.

Since taking over, the Pirates have spent top-3 money on the amateur draft, overhauled their Latin American scouting compound, and turned into a team with a legitimate, though not overwhelming future. He has promised to raise payroll when doing so will result in a team that is actually competitive, and there’s no reason to not believe him until the Pirates are ready to compete and fail to sign key free agents.
