Image: Veteran Presence Caught On Film
During yesterday’s fantastic Greinke vs. Reineke Brewers-Reds matchup yesterday (with Roenicke managing, no less), somebody without a weird amount of Ns, Ks and Es in their name stood out. That was Edgar Renteria, Reds veteran and occasional shortstop, who is caught on film here emitting pure veteran presence:
That was a weak ground ball off the bat of Brewers “shortstop” Yuniesky Betancourt, who actually managed to hustle his way into second and then score on an ensuing Nyjer Morgan single. The picture really doesn’t do justice to this play — check out the video, too.
Jack Moore's work can be seen at VICE Sports and anywhere else you're willing to pay him to write. Buy his e-book.
The best part is that on the MLB.com site, the description states, “Edgar Renteria can’t come up with a sharp grounder off the bat of Yuniesky Betancourt in the third”
There are at least three errors in that sentence:
Renteria’s error, as described by the sentence.
The description of Yuniesky Betancourt as a shortstop, as observed by the author of this NotGraphs piece, Jack Moore.
And the description of the grounder as, “sharp”
Yeah…how is that a ‘sharp’ grounder?
I don’t understand the second one: What you quoted made no reference to shortstop.
